Kitten Pet Health Insurance Enrollment Growing, According to Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group Data
AKRON, Ohio (April 24, 2018) – The number of kittens enrolled in pet health insurance is on the rise. In fact, according to data from Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group™, providers of ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance, kitten enrollment has increased 62 percent between 2012 and 2016.
“So many pet owners rely on misperceptions: ‘cats are independent, cats don’t need as much medical care, cats don’t look sick so they’re not sick’,” said Dr. Jane Brunt, Council Director for CATalyst, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of feline health care. “We must continue to educate the public about what health care cats need and deserve.”
In addition to more enrollments, the usage of pet health insurance for kittens is also increasing as cat owners close the gap on claims submissions for pets less than a year old. In 2012, 26 percent of kitten owners filed claims compared to 41 percent in 2016. The majority of claims submitted for kittens are for non-wellness items, meaning more medical services from veterinarians.
“While dogs still outnumber cats in terms of overall enrollments, this new analysis demonstrates the growing popularity of pet health insurance amongst feline pet parents,” said Dennis Rushovich, Senior Vice President, Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group. “Talking to kitten owners about pet health insurance is another way veterinarians can encourage pet parents to provide the same level of veterinary care to their cats as they do to their dogs.”
“This growing interest presents veterinarians with many opportunities to provide improved pet care while increasing revenue,” added Rushovich. “Pet health insurance makes it easier for clients to adhere to veterinary recommendations. Practicing veterinarians should know it’s never too early to start talking with cat owners about pet health insurance.”
